Inca Trail - Day 1

We arrived in the old Inca capital, Cuzco, and prepared, with some trepidation for the four-day hike along the famous Inca Trail. 38 kms in total at a height of up to 4200 meters seemed quite daunting. We had our concerns about the kids as there is no turning back and we aren't exactly experienced hikers. As it turned out, we should have been worried about ourselves! The trailhead was busy. Some 400 people do this every day! Our group was just seven, plus seven porters, a chef and the guide, Urbano (nicknamed Rambo for no reason really). We had to carry our own sleeping bags and belongings which came in at about 17 kgs each rucksack. The first day was relatively easy as we only climbed some 400 vertical meters, but we were surprised how knackered we were already! Our two Irish friends. James and Eva, as well as the fearless Susan kept spirits up and we were all having a jolly time.
