The People

The local tribes made us realize how tough life can be for people. Their open friendliness made us feel very welcome wherever we went. With Mel’s broken Spanish, she managed to make friends at each village. Although poor, they are generally content and happy. Typically villages were between 150 and 300 people and were found hundreds of kilometers upriver. Schooling was inadequate as it depended on an available teacher. As was medical assistance. They depended on the jungle and the local “Sherman” (witchdoctor) to help provide cures. Fun was had playing volleyball one very hot afternoon.
