The River

The rains had come to Iquitos unusually early this year (Global warming). Before we arrived, it had been raining for seven days. The river was rising fast and rose a further 22 cms while we were there. We had a long journey upriver to reach the reserve, and life can be tiring in the jungle!…….The Rio Maranon river in the Pacaya Samiria reserve feeds into the Amazon. Further upriver, a dark black tributary, the Rio Yanuyacu, joins the main river, which is light brown from the different minerals. (How’s that for a Capuchino on the Amazon!). The taxis look overloaded and precarious! just like SA! The boat Tamryn is looking at was our transport for five days. It carried all the luggage, people, food, tents, pots and pans etc.
